PRODUCT INFORMATION

The “Opus” centrepiece designed by Guido Venturini is a piece of metal lace, a sophisticated modern crochet produced using the laser cutting techniques. Using a lengthy process with the point of the laser repeatedly rising and falling on the sheet metal, the steel is perforated with painstaking precision in order to reproduce the openwork and the processing effect of a piece of lace. Once perforated, the sheet metal is polished and modelled into its final shape with a die. Produced from stainless steel at the Crusinallo site, “Opus” is a large centrepiece, a sophisticated object that communicates incredible lightness. For this project Guido Venturini took his inspiration from the light touch of lace: “When Alessi asked me to work on a metal perforation created through laser cutting, I got to work with a great sense of freedom, designing and experimenting. Following the hand I saw embroidery and various forms produced, some more frequent than others.” Its elaborate processing makes “Opus” one of the Officina Alessi branded projects, bringing together the innovative research Alessi has always promoted. “Opus” comes in three versions: stainless steel with a mirrored finish and in the variants of white or red painted steel. Centrepiece in 18/10 stainless steel. cm 60 x 34 – h cm 7,5

CONCEPT & INSPIRATION

“My mother was a doctor, a paediatric specialist. […] Doilies, fringes, lace and also colourful bed spreads, which my wife and I still use for our children. As a child, sitting beside her on the couch, I learned the rudiments of crochet […] Then, as a teenager, I left this kind of lacework behind. It didn’t seem very up-to-date. Only later did I start to appreciate decoration, embroidery and mouldings: primitive ones, folk art, or medieval and classical styles. These are all things that go very well with the rich curlicues of the soul. […] There are great works and minor works. But all of them contribute to the final and natural work that is life itself, the realisation of one’s inner self, what the alchemists called Opus.” - Guido Venturini -
